It's been said, perhaps too glibly and too often, that Australia is a nation of immigrants, meaning of course that those of us not of Indigenous stock, come from families that have been established here for less than two-and-a-half centuries. Eastern Writers Group member Margaret Bennett is descended from one of these immigrants, as most of us are, and has published a novelised version of his life. The book is The Danish Cobbler. It tells the story of bootmaker Peter Moller, who in 1864 leaves his Danish village to search for gold in New Zealand. But after becoming a naturalised Kiwi, he feels the pull of the Victorian city later to be known as "Marvellous Melbourne".
If you would like to follow his adventures, you can order The Danish Cobbler from the author herself; email mbennett@lexicon.net.
