Seahorses
by G. M. Naug
A little boy rode a seahorse across his dreams,
To those far-off shores with adventurous scenes,
Following ships their flags spangled with stars,
Manned by strange bearded men, perhaps from Mars?
The wind carried songs from sirens' caverned lairs'
As he raced a mermaid with silver tail and golden hair,
Two blue-nosed dolphins danced with delight,
As an albatross watched over them from a lofty height.
Then he fought with a typhoon's screaming wrath,
As he steered his course by stars of the north.
To that place where his father had sailed to war,
In a proud ship now rusting on a dark ocean floor.
From seaweed a loving tribute he wove,
To float forever down memory's grove . . .
