Streamers

by G. M. Naug

The dock was host to a colourful scene
But I stood alone to farewell a dream
Paper cascaded in rainbow bands
Linking us together with slender strands.

I caught the smile you threw to me
As streamers fluttered into the sea
White gulls winged in a farewell parade
As I watched your face shimmer and fade.

My scarlet streamer stretched and rent
As shadows of memories came and went
I dreamed of you here with me on the shore
Where dwelt no thought of 'Nevermore'.

A siren on the docks sadly wailed
In testimony to love that failed
I knew now you'd never needed me
But could my heart from you be free?

The band laid away the fife and drum
As an ominous cloud obscured the sun
My feet snapped a tangled, twirling streamer
As rain pelted down to dredge a dreamer.
